A 1994 YJ to be exact, with just under 198,000 miles on it. Green exterior, sand interior. Totally stock (quite literally- the spark plugs have never been changed!), but with new tires, an "upgraded sound system" and a ridiculously, ass-backwards security system. It's beautiful!
Jr and I decided we wanted to start this blog to keep track of things in general, but specifically, upgrades on the truck. Neither of us are very vehicularly inclined, so to speak, and while the standard Jeep forums are great, it was taking us forever and a day to find YJ specific information on small fixes, such as our water pump issue, putting on the soft top, and what "that noise" is. We decided to chronicle our adventure with this truck as a way for others who might be coming from a non-mechanical background to find easy, quick answers and, most importantly, learn from our mistakes!
The thought of purchasing a Wrangler has been in our heads for a while. My first car, purchased at 19, was a 1994 Jeep Wrangler Sahara, same color green as our current! I bought it for $3200 in 2009 with only 54,000 miles on it, in mint condition. I ended up trading it in at 80,000 miles (still can't bring myself to terms with THAT decision!) for a new car, but always had the idea in the back of my head to get another. One rainy, rainy, RAINY night a few weeks ago, I came home from work to find the internet in the house was down (thanks, VZ). I had a paper I had to submit for an online summer course I am taking, so Jr and I packed up the laptops and headed to the mall to
camp out at B&N for a while. I submitted the paper, and Jr did some work he had to complete. At some point, Jr decided to start looking at craigslist for any cars under $2000. Our two daily drivers, 1998 and 2003 Ford Explorers, are starting to wear down, and we were looking to alleviate pressure on them. On the first page of craigslist, Jr found a 1994 YJ in Monroe for just $1500, hard and soft top included! We called the guy, hopped in the car (grabbed our handy mechanic buddy on the way) and headed down to Monroe. Two hours later (and one accidentally-shut-down-due-to-fraud debit card) later, we were the proud owners of a somewhat rusty but overall gorgeous YJ. One mile out of the guy's driveway, and we were the proud owners of a YJ that was blowing so much smoke I swore it must be on fire. Turns out, the gentleman who sold us the truck had replaced the water pump himself, and of course, incorrectly. He did not want to deal with the issue himself, so he took some money off the purchase price and had it flat-bedded to our house the next day. After some discord with the tow truck driver (he was late, blew a tire, couldn't find our apartment!), that YJ was in our driveway, and a few days later, was legal with insurance and plates! The next battle was the water pump saga......
